How to Use a Weighted Blanket

Posted by Jean Davis on

Do you long for a good night’s sleep?

Are you craving to simply fall asleep like a normal person, and stay asleep all night!?

We understand…

If you have problems with sleeping, anxiety, stress or obsessive-compulsive disorder, you might be interested in weighted blanket therapy. Scientific research has shown that the type of deep pressure that a weighted blanket provides can help support reduced anxiety and have a calming effect that helps you sleep!

Weighted blankets can have positive benefits that can help support a number of disorders, like anxiety, depression, PTSD, ADHD, and autism. In fact, weighted blankets were developed to help children with autism via a non-medicated, safe and effective method.

A weighted blanket provides deep pressure that releases the brain chemical serotonin, which is critical to a calm and stable mood. When serotonin is released, the body also releases melatonin -- which helps to promote sleep and regulate the sleep cycle.

Excellent...

The blanket also can help increase the levels of oxytocin, a hormone that helps provide a feeling of relaxation, making you feel at ease. Oxytocin slows the heart and reduces blood pressure, prompting the body to relax.

Perfect...

A therapeutic weighted blanket helps ground your body during sleep which may enhance the deeply calming effect. Studies show that grounding may help reduce nighttime levels of cortisol, a stress hormone that has a negative effect on blood sugar, digestion, and immunity.

Researchers say the deep pressure from the weighted blanket is calming to the nervous system, helping the anxious person get the restorative sleep they need.

Ooooh… sounds wonderful, doesn’t it?

Anything that reduces the effects of stress is good with me!

Using Your Weighted Blanket

The therapeutic weighted blanket can be used to replace the comforter you currently have on your bed. However, some people prefer to use both a weighted blanket & an extra blanket or comforter on top or beneath it. As long as the majority of your body is covered from the chest down then either option is good!

To use the blanket, you simply need to cover your body from the neck down and ensure that it is fully covering your chest and legs. Your feet can be covered or uncovered, however, you are most comfortable :)

For best results, simply lie on your back while sleeping under the cover. This ensures the blanket’s weight will be evenly distributed across your entire body.

Weighted Blanket Uses

Here’s a bit about how a weighted blanket works...

A weighted blanket uses deep touch pressure to help with what’s called “proprioception” - a term that describes the brain’s ability to know where all body parts are in space. For example, you can stretch your arms and then touch your nose. You can find your slippers in a dark bedroom.

What are weighted blankets used for? There are many, many uses for these blankets and customers have noted that they can help support the following:

  • Helps insomnia

Peeking inside a Mela Comfort weighted blanket

To help you better understand how to use your weighted blanket, below are some further details about the components.

Every blanket is very soft… feels good on your skin...

Outer cover: Mela Comfort blankets include an outer cover made of 100% minky brushed polyester, a very soft fabric. We also stock a range of other luxurious and cooling covers that we sell separately. Please visit our online store if you would like to purchase an additional cover.

Weighted inner section: The exterior layer of the inner weighted section is made of 100% premium cotton. For the padding inside there is a thin layer of recycled polyfill which provides superior weight distribution and comfortable cushioning. The weighted pellets are made from the best quality quartz glass. This means it’s non-hazardous, odourless and non-toxic alongside being Intertek certified.

Washing: Both the Mela Comfort inner and outer cover are machine washable. As long as you keep a cover on (except for washing), you shouldn’t need to wash the weighted section.

Weight distribution: Mela Comfort uses a unique manufacturing technique to ensure that the weight is as evenly distributed as possible. Our blankets have 33% smaller squares (measuring 11cm x 11cm) compared to most competitors; these squares hold the weighted material and result in the weight being more evenly distributed. If the weighted pellets do happen to ‘bunch up’ all you need to do is give your blanket a quick shake and it will be as good as new!

Adult use only: Our larger weighted blankets are intended for adult use only. They are not suitable for children! Due to the heavy weight of the product and the large size, young children should not be left unsupervised with a weighted blanket unless it’s a children's smaller version.

Pet alert! While your pooch might like his Thundershirt, we don’t recommend placing the weighted blanket on top of an animal due to the heavy weight. They might find it difficult to get out from underneath it. However, it is safe to have your pets lie on top of the blanket - just make sure to watch out for their sharp claws!

Additional points: Some people like to use an electric blanket. While this is fine, we advise that you may get very hot if using an electric blanket along with your Mela Comfort weighted blanket.

Travel plans? Customers have asked about transporting a weighted blanket on flights. You will need to check an extra bag for the blanket. We can’t comment on whether airport security will want to check the filling material or not.
